Misregulation of mitochondrial 6mA promotes the propagation of mutant mtDNA and causes aging in C. Elegans
Despite the recognition of the implication of mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) in various diseases, the mechanisms regulating mtDNA copy number and expression are not completely understood. Dr. Zuryn's group from Australia discovered a new pathway involving N6-methylation (6mA) on the mtDNA that controls mitochondria biogenesis and function in diverse animal and plant species, which is altered by aging via DNA methyltransferase DAMT-1 and demethylase ALKB-1.
